Dialogue is one of the most used words in the context of Syria. Paradoxically enough, it often aims at the dialogue between politically antagonistic groups. But shouldn´t it be more than just a buzzword? We believe that what is missing from the debate is dialogue between individuals and groups that actually share an everyday life with each other in Syria on the ground.
Dialogue should not be something abstract, but a meaningful exchange of perceptions and opinions. A method people turn to when addressing conflictive issues peacefully. It can be a way to think about the society you aim for, e.g. the new social contract be it in North East or North West Syria. To foster this tool, we support up to 6 months long projects with up to 20,000 EUR.
about:syria is a new fund to support dialogue projects by Syrians inside Syria and in the diaspora in Germany. With this third call, we aim to support Syrian initiatives and organizations inside Syria that work on the following topics through the tool of dialogue:
- Women and feminism
- Youth and political inclusion
- Inclusion of marginalized groups
- Climate change, environmental policies and climate justice
Through the about:syria fund, you can conduct projects that aim at breaking stereotypes and help to create spaces to carry out dialogue in a safer spacey to peacefully exchange perceptions and opinions on local conflicts. The financial and project support is provided by the fund. We want to support you in making a contribution to social-political debates and controversies in order to sensitively deal with conflicts in safer spaces, to bridge differences and to find approaches for common ideas for a future Syrian social contract. The projects can take place on the ground or or virtually or as a mix of both: role-playing games, business games or even regular meetings. Be creative!
Everything you need to know
The about:syria fund supports projects with up to 20,000 EUR that create long-term spaces for exchange and dialogue. Registered and non-registered Syrian civil society initiatives and organizations in North East and North West Syria (all areas outside the control of the Syrian regime) can now apply for financial support for projects of up to six months.
There are two funding options:
- The small grantsupports projects within the framework of 2,000-10,000 euros and can also be applied for by initiatives that do not yet have much experience with project implementation.
- The bigger grant supports projects in a range of 10,000-20,000 euros. Please only apply for the bigger grant if you have proven experience and capacity to implement such a scale of project.
You don’t have that much experience in dialogue projects yet? No problem! We accompany you during the project implementation with advisory offers. There will be room for all participating initiatives and organizations to exchange experiences in a strategy workshop.

How does the application process work?
The application process consists of two steps:
In step 1 you submit a short project outline of 2 pages by 10.12. 2022. We will let you know by mid-January, 2023 whether you have been pre-selected for step 2 to hand in a full application. If selected for step 2, we invite you to an online workshop to work out the detailed project application with the support of the about:syria team. The workshop is expected to take place end of January 2023. You must submit the final applications by 28.02.2023.
Only then are all project proposals forwarded to the external selection committee, which selects the projects to be funded. Only projects selected in step 1 can submit an application in step 2.
An online information event will take place on November 21st at 4 pm (Berlin time, 6 pm Damascus time). This call is exclusively for groups, initiatives and organizations inside Syria who want to apply for the fund for this call . You can find the zoom link here.

How does the application work?
Please submit the following documents for step 1:
A project outline of about 2 pages. There is no template, but you must cover the following aspects in the project outline:
Short context and problem description with a concrete description of which problem or which challenges you want to tackle with your dialogue project. Why is it important to solve this problem in the field of the work on
- women/ feminism
- youth and political inclusion
- inclusion of marginalized groups
- climate change, environmental policies and climate justice.
Which target group/community is it about and where (specific location). Give a short description of your proposed solution (project idea). How do you want to solve the problem? What is creative or innovative about it?How do you want to implement it with your resources and experience and what additional resources do you need?Please explain what would change positively for the target group.
Please briefly state the total costs in EUR that you estimate for the project.
Profile of the initiative or organization (please use this template).
Documents that prove your legal status if you are officially registered (e.g. excerpt from the register of associations). Groups and initiatives that are not registered can also apply
