A severe earthquake shook the Turkish-Syrian border region on 6 February 2023. The northwest of Syria (Idlib and Rif-Aleppo) was hit particularly hard by the quake. The death toll from the earthquake has risen to more than 1600 in Syria alone while hundreds are still missing under the rubble.
This is also because buildings and infrastructure in these areas have already been in a desolate and dilapidated state due to years of bombardment by the Assad regime and its allies. In Rif-Aleppo in particular, houses have collapsed time and again in recent years, even without an earthquake.
The current disaster is hitting the internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees hardest, who have lost their homes and shelters yet again as a result of the earthquake. Our partners in the area are civil society organisations that have been active on the ground for years and also provide emergency aid when necessary. Currently, the people on the ground need drinking water, food, medicine, emergency shelters, hygiene kits and equipment to clear the rubble.
To be able to act quickly, they need our support right now!
